Shape Series

What could the future of craft look like? The "Shape-Series" bridges the traditional craft of blacksmithing and contemporary design. Every attempt to do so would be only pure aesthetics and thereby worthless without confronting itself with urgent societal questions. Hence, the "Shape-Series" approach is reclaiming scrap steel by forging. Instead of the energy-intensive use of iron ore or material recycling, it transforms industrial waste material through a resource-saving forging process into high-quality crafted pieces of art. Obviously, will the "Shape-Series" on its own not solve the global problem of finite resources and energy. Still, it marks a token of transformation to sustainable craft and art.

The “'Series-Series” aesthetics follow the simple idea of avoiding straight lines and right angles. Further, the forging process achieves a triple transformation. Triangular or rectangular geometric base forms convert into organically grown "Shapes". The impact of the fire and manual hammering resolves the initial surface treatment and creates a one-off texture and color. Finally, some planar sheets alter to volumetric "Shapes". The single shapes interlock each other, creating the flow of various composition lines. This creates an ornament-like structure whose unique shapes distinguish from the repetition of classical forms, often found in traditional blacksmithing. Small holes in some "Shapes" testify to the usage of the piece before forging.
